The Different Gum Disease Stages
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a common oral health problem affecting millions of Americans yearly. It involves the gums and other structures surrounding the teeth and holding them in place. While gum disease is easily treatable if caught early, it can lead to serious health issues if left unchecked. That’s why it’s essential to be aware of the different stages of gum disease and what you can do to prevent it.
Gum Disease can be broken down into four stages; gingivitis, mild periodontitis, moderate periodontitis, and severe periodontitis.
Gingivitis: This is the first stage of gum disease and is often caused by poor oral hygiene habits or hereditary factors. At this stage, gums may become red and swollen due to inflammation caused by bacteria in plaque build-up. Symptoms may include bleeding while brushing or flossing and bad breath. Fortunately, gingivitis can be reversed with proper dental care and improved home care routines such as daily brushing and flossing.
Mild Periodontitis: During this stage, the condition has progressed beyond gingivitis but has not reached an advanced level yet. At this point, pockets have started to form between the teeth and gums, which can cause further damage if not treated properly. This can lead to more bacteria entering these pockets which can cause more tissue damage as well as bone loss around the affected tooth or teeth. Advanced treatments such as scaling and root planing may be necessary for treatment at this stage to prevent further damage.
Moderate Periodontitis: At this stage, there has been significant bone loss around one or more teeth due to infection from bacteria in plaque build-up on the teeth surfaces near the gum line. The pockets created by bone loss are more significant than before, which means they are even more susceptible to further harm from bacteria entering them and leading to further destruction of soft tissue and bone structure supporting your teeth. Treatment at this stage requires more aggressive procedures, such as pocket reduction surgery which will allow for better access to cleaning during follow-up appointments with Dr. Dyer.
Severe Periodontitis: This is the most advanced stage of gum disease. Significant bone loss has occurred around several teeth, making it difficult for a patient’s natural dentition (or bite) to remain intact without intervention from a specialist. Treatment options may include removing tooth fragments lost due to decay/disease, deep cleaning procedures such as scaling/root planing, possible grafts, surgical extractions, fitting for dentures/implants, etc. In extreme cases, extraction may be required for new prosthetic replacements (dentures/implants)to be placed for optimal functioning of your jaw muscles when chewing food.
